Climate change predictions forecast decreased precipitation together with increased rain intensity and changes in the rainfall distribution pattern along the season; thus, runoff management and rainwater treatment are at the focus of discourse and planning and are implemented extensively in many countries around the world.
Before the winter, the staff of the nature park established retention and infiltration ponds in the pine grove; these ponds drain runoff flow towards Timsah Stream. Together with young adults from Ramat Hanadiv’s “Junior Rangers” project, tubers originating from the area in which a new trail was built in the park were buried around the pond. These ponds drain the water flowing from the Sustainability Garden to the wadi and retain it for the purpose of infiltration to the underground aquifer.
Yes, instead of flowing to the sea, this water replenishes the groundwater and Ein Zur spring.
Moreover, Ramat Hanadiv has begun mapping and building a model of runoff flow on site, with the aim of minimising runoff loss, increasing the infiltration of high quality water to the aquifer, and enjoying a range of other benefits.
When the mapping is complete, natural systems will be planned for water diversion, retention and infiltration, while supporting natural habitats and minimising runoff flow out of Ramat Hanadiv.
