The Cypress Stands Alone

Man and tree meet to establish a shared daily routine – an inspirational meeting

Michael Lasry lives in Binyamina, and finds himself walking the trails of Ramat Hanadiv almost every day. In fact, Ramat Hanadiv is really like a backyard for him. During each walk or cycling trip, Michael absorbs and enjoys the largest and most significant green lung of the region, and pays special attention to the impressive nature around him. Within this abundance of nature, Michael noticed a unique, lone cypress tree.

Michael believes it was a sensitive artistic statement to leave a single cypress in this space. The exposed, lone cypress touched his heart and Michael’s soul was bound to the tree’s canopy.

Thus, for more than a year Michael has been visiting the tree at sunrise and sunset and documenting it with his mobile phone. The eyes and the heart collate the photos together into a kind of personal exhibition that he calls ‘Daily Routine’.

As part of his routine, amid the pressures and burdens of daily life, the lone tree is a symbol for Michael, a place to stop and breathe.

The break we take at different points in time during the day is the green lung, the air we breathe and is part of the daily routine of my tree’.

A glance at the tree’s silhouette reminds him of himself and of us humans, who look different from each other, exposed and in need of a break, recognition and compassion. ‘At the beginning and end of the day, when you see the sun cast the tree’s shadow, something very exposed and beautiful is created. The break we take at different points in time during the day is the green lung, the air we breathe and is part of the daily routine of my tree’.
