A Spatial Perspective The Regional Sustainability Initiative
The Regional Sustainability Initiative is a new project promoting management based on sustainability principles, in the area surrounding Hanadiv Valley. The primary objective is to create a regional partnership that will bring significant change in the region’s human and physical landscape within just a few years.
The initiative brings together a number of partners: the local councils of Zikhron Ya’akov, Binyamina – Givat Ada and Jisr A-Zarqa, the regional councils of Alona and Hof Carmel and Ramat Hanadiv. The central challenge of the initiative is to find a balance between processes of development and demographic growth in the region and the desire to maintain the rural character, agricultural landscape and natural values. The main target is to assimilate principles and indices of sustainability in the conduct of both authorities and residents, and for this purpose, a sustainability
strategy will be formulated in partnership with the region’s residents.
The initiative brings with it an innovative approach that defines the regional scale as the key to a sustainable future. Among the first active projects of the initiative in the region is an original pilot program that proposes a systematic model to integrate the community in efforts to control the Mediterranean fruit fly that causes yield losses in the region. An additional project, ‘Community Builds Environment’, supports community activity on sustainability projects and encourages links between the region’s communities.
